Palinurus elephas

Palinurus elephas, commonly known as the European spiny lobster or crayfish, is a species of decapod crustacean found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is a large, robust lobster distinguished by its spiny exoskeleton and two long, thick antennae.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Palinurus elephas is a large lobster, reaching a length of up to 60 cm and a weight of up to 8 kg. Its body is covered with strong spines, giving it a rugged appearance. The coloration varies from dark red to orange-brown. The two long, thick antennae are a distinctive feature of this species, used for navigation and detecting predators.

Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]

The Palinurus elephas is found in the Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles to Morocco, and in the Mediterranean Sea. It inhabits rocky substrates and seagrass meadows, at depths ranging from 5 to 150 meters. It prefers warm, shallow waters but can adapt to a wide range of temperatures and salinities.

Behavior and Ecology[edit | edit source]

The Palinurus elephas is a nocturnal species, hiding in crevices during the day and emerging at night to feed. Its diet consists mainly of mollusks, echinoderms, and small fish. It has a complex life cycle, with a planktonic larval stage that can last up to two years.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

The Palinurus elephas is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to overfishing and habitat degradation. Conservation measures include size limits, closed seasons, and the establishment of marine protected areas.

Economic Importance[edit | edit source]

The Palinurus elephas is a highly prized seafood species, especially in Southern Europe. It is caught using traps and nets, and is often sold live in fish markets.
