Papagou-Cholargos

Papagou-Cholargos is a municipality in the northeastern part of Athens, Greece. The area is named after two former communities, Papagou and Cholargos, which now form the municipality.

The area of Papagou-Cholargos has a rich history dating back to ancient times. The name "Cholargos" is derived from the ancient Greek words "cholos" (lame) and "argos" (bright), referring to the mythological figure Hephaestus, the lame god of fire and metalworking, who was believed to have had his workshop in the area.

Papagou, on the other hand, was named after Lieutenant General Leonidas Papagos, a distinguished Greek military officer and later Prime Minister of Greece. The area was originally developed as a military camp and residential area for military personnel and their families.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Papagou-Cholargos is located in the northeastern part of Athens, adjacent to the Hymettus mountain range. The municipality is characterized by its hilly terrain and abundant green spaces, including the notable Alsos Papagou, a large urban park.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2011 census, the population of Papagou-Cholargos was approximately 45,000. The area is primarily residential, with a mix of single-family homes and apartment buildings.

Infrastructure[edit | edit source]

The municipality is served by several bus lines and the Athens Metro. It is also home to several schools, including the University of Athens' Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Science, and a number of healthcare facilities.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Papagou-Cholargos is known for its vibrant cultural scene, with numerous cultural events and festivals held throughout the year. The area is also home to several notable landmarks, including the Church of Agia Triada and the War Museum of Athens.
