Pelvic exam

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Pelvic exam is a physical examination of the female pelvic organs. Broadly, it can be divided into the external examination and internal examination. It is called a pelvic exam because it is often used to check the health of the pelvic organs.

External examination[edit | edit source]

The external examination includes an examination of the mons pubis, the outer lips of the vagina (labia majora), the inner lips of the vagina (labia minora), the clitoris, the opening of the urethra (urethral meatus), the opening of the vagina (introitus) and the anus.

Internal examination[edit | edit source]

The internal examination includes an examination of the vagina and the cervix with a speculum and an examination of the uterus and ovaries with a gloved hand.

Purpose[edit | edit source]

The pelvic exam is used to check the health of the female pelvic organs and to look for signs of infection or other conditions.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The procedure for a pelvic exam varies, but it generally includes the following steps:

  1. The patient is asked to undress from the waist down and is given a sheet to cover herself.
  2. The patient is asked to lie down on an examination table with her knees bent and her feet in stirrups.
  3. The doctor or nurse examines the external genital area for signs of infection, irritation, or other conditions.
  4. The doctor or nurse inserts a speculum into the vagina to examine the vagina and cervix.
  5. The doctor or nurse inserts one or two gloved fingers into the vagina and presses on the abdomen with the other hand to check the size and shape of the uterus and ovaries.
  6. The doctor or nurse may also take samples for Pap smear testing or other laboratory tests.

Risks and complications[edit | edit source]

While the pelvic exam is generally safe, it can cause discomfort or embarrassment for some women. There is also a small risk of infection or injury to the pelvic organs.
