Penile Implant

A Penile implant or Penile prosthesis is a medical device that is surgically placed within the penis and scrotum in men to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). This procedure is typically considered when less invasive treatments for ED are ineffective.

Types of Penile Implants[edit | edit source]

There are two main types of penile implants: inflatable and semi-rigid.

Inflatable Implants[edit | edit source]

Inflatable implants are the most common type of penile implant. They consist of two cylinders that are placed in the penis, a pump that goes in the scrotum, and a reservoir of fluid that is placed in the abdomen. The pump moves fluid from the reservoir into the cylinders to cause an erection.

Semi-rigid Implants[edit | edit source]

Semi-rigid implants consist of two flexible rods that are placed in the penis. These rods always keep the penis firm enough for sexual activity but can be bent down when not in use.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The surgery for a penile implant is usually done at a surgery center or hospital by a urologist. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

As with any surgery, there are risks associated with penile implant surgery. These can include infection, implant problems, and unwanted changes in penis size or shape.

Recovery[edit | edit source]

Recovery from penile implant surgery typically involves a few weeks of healing. During this time, the patient is advised to refrain from sexual activity.

Effectiveness[edit | edit source]

Penile implants are highly effective in treating erectile dysfunction. Most men report satisfaction with the results of the procedure.
