Pepete (José Dámaso Rodríguez y Rodríguez) was a renowned bullfighter from Spain. Born on December 11, 1824, in Écija, Seville, he became one of the most celebrated matadors of the 19th century. His career was marked by his exceptional skill, bravery, and tragic end.

Pepete's professional debut took place in Madrid in 1847. His performance was met with great acclaim, and he soon became a favorite among bullfighting enthusiasts. Over the years, he performed in numerous bullrings across Spain, including the prestigious Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid and the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza in Seville.

Pepete was known for his distinctive style, which combined grace and precision. He was particularly skilled in the use of the muleta, a small red cape used in the final third of a bullfight. His ability to control and dominate the bull with the muleta earned him widespread admiration.

Pepete's career was tragically cut short on April 20, 1862, during a bullfight in Madrid. He was gored by a bull named Jocinero, suffering severe injuries that led to his death. His passing was a significant loss to the bullfighting community and marked the end of an era.
