Perineal

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Perineal refers to the region of the body located between the pubic symphysis and the coccyx. This area is significant in both anatomy and medicine, as it contains several important structures and is involved in various bodily functions.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The perineal region is divided into two parts: the urogenital triangle and the anal triangle. The urogenital triangle contains the openings of the urethra and the vagina in females, or the base of the penis in males. The anal triangle contains the anus and its associated structures.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

In medicine, the perineal region is often involved in various conditions and procedures. For example, a perineal tear can occur during childbirth, and a perineal prostatectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the prostate gland through the perineum.
