Perineal raphe

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Perineal Raphe

The Perineal Raphe is a visible line or ridge that extends from the anus through the perineum. It is found in both males and females, and is more prominent in males, extending from the anus, up the midline of the scrotum, and continuing over the ventral aspect of the penis to the top of the glans penis.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "raphe" is derived from the Greek word "ῥαφή" (rhaphḗ), meaning "seam" or "suture". The term "perineal" is derived from the Greek word "περίνεος" (períneos), meaning "space between the anus and scrotum" or "space between the anus and vulva".

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The perineal raphe is a line of fibrous tissue that marks where the two halves of the urogenital folds fused in the embryo. In males, this line continues over the penis and scrotum. In females, it is less prominent and does not extend as far.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The perineal raphe is an important landmark in certain surgical procedures, such as urethroplasty and perineoplasty. It can also be involved in certain medical conditions, such as epispadias and hypospadias.
