Pes hippocampi
Pes Hippocampi is a term used in anatomy to describe a part of the hippocampus, a major component of the human brain. The term "pes hippocampi" is derived from Latin and translates to "foot of the hippocampus". This is due to the structure's resemblance to a sea horse's foot, with the hippocampus itself named after the Greek word for seahorse.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The pes hippocampi is located in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, adjacent to the amygdala. It is a part of the hippocampus, which is a crucial structure for memory and spatial navigation. The hippocampus is divided into several regions, including the pes hippocampi, which is located at the anterior end.
Function[edit | edit source]
The pes hippocampi, as part of the hippocampus, plays a significant role in the formation of new memories and is also involved in learning. It is particularly important in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the pes hippocampi can result in anterograde amnesia, which is the inability to form new memories. It can also lead to difficulty in spatial navigation. Conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy can cause damage to this area.
