Pet Sematary is a 2019 American supernatural horror film directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer. It is the second adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name, following the 1989 film. The screenplay was written by Jeff Buhler, and the film stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow.

The film follows Louis Creed, a doctor from Boston, who moves to the rural town of Ludlow, Maine with his wife Rachel, their two young children, Ellie and Gage, and their cat, Church. They discover a mysterious burial ground in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.

The film was announced in 2017, with Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer set to direct. Jeff Buhler was hired to write the screenplay. Principal photography began in June 2018 and took place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Pet Sematary premiered at the South by Southwest festival on March 16, 2019, and was released in the United States on April 5, 2019, by Paramount Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its atmosphere and performances but criticized its reliance on jump scares.

The film grossed over $113 million worldwide against a production budget of $21 million. It holds a rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score on Metacritic, indicating mixed or average reviews.

Differences from the Novel[edit | edit source]

While the film stays largely faithful to the source material, there are notable differences. One significant change is the character of Ellie being the one who is resurrected instead of Gage, which alters the dynamics and events of the story.
