American AIDS activist Peter Staley

Peter Staley (born January 9, 1961) is an American HIV/AIDS LGBT rights activist. He is best known for his work with the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) and for his role in the documentary film How to Survive a Plague.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Peter Staley was born in Sacremento, California. He grew up in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, and attended Oberlin College in Ohio. After graduating, he moved to New York City to work as a bond trader for J.P. Morgan & Co..

Activism[edit | edit source]

ACT UP[edit | edit source]

Staley joined ACT UP in 1987, shortly after being diagnosed with HIV. He quickly became a prominent member of the organization, known for his strategic thinking and media savvy. Staley was instrumental in organizing several high-profile protests, including the Wall Street protest in 1987 and the FDA protest in 1988.

Treatment Action Group[edit | edit source]

In 1991, Staley co-founded the Treatment Action Group (TAG), an independent AIDS research and policy think tank. TAG has been influential in accelerating the development of antiretroviral drugs and advocating for better treatment options for people living with HIV/AIDS.
