Phagocytes
Phagocytes are a type of cell that have the ability to engulf and absorb bacteria, microorganisms, and cellular debris. This process is known as phagocytosis. Phagocytes are an essential part of the immune system, and they help to protect the body from infection.
Types of Phagocytes[edit | edit source]
There are several types of phagocytes, including neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, mast cells, and dendritic cells. Each of these cells plays a unique role in the immune response.
Neutrophils[edit | edit source]
Neutrophils are the most common type of phagocyte and are usually the first cells to arrive at the site of an infection. They are capable of engulfing and killing bacteria and other microorganisms.
Monocytes[edit | edit source]
Monocytes are a type of white blood cell that can differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells. They are involved in the immune response to inflammation and infection.
Macrophages[edit | edit source]
Macrophages are large phagocytic cells that are capable of engulfing and digesting cellular debris, bacteria, and other microorganisms. They also play a role in the immune response to inflammation and infection.
Mast Cells[edit | edit source]
Mast cells are a type of white blood cell that are involved in the immune response to allergies and asthma. They release chemicals that cause inflammation and attract other immune cells to the site of an infection.
Dendritic Cells[edit | edit source]
Dendritic cells are a type of white blood cell that are involved in the immune response to viruses and other pathogens. They present antigens to T cells, triggering an immune response.
Function of Phagocytes[edit | edit source]
Phagocytes play a crucial role in the immune system. They are responsible for engulfing and digesting harmful bacteria, microorganisms, and cellular debris. This process, known as phagocytosis, helps to protect the body from infection.
