Pharyngeal plexus (venous)
Pharyngeal plexus (venous) is a network of veins located in the pharynx, a part of the human anatomy that connects the nasal and oral cavities to the esophagus and larynx. This plexus plays a crucial role in the venous drainage of the pharynx and surrounding structures.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The pharyngeal plexus (venous) is situated on the outer surface of the pharyngeal constrictor muscles, which are responsible for the constriction of the pharynx during swallowing. It receives blood from the pharyngeal veins, tonsillar veins, and lingual veins, and drains into the internal jugular vein.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the pharyngeal plexus (venous) is to drain deoxygenated blood from the pharynx and its associated structures, including the tonsils and the tongue. This process is essential for maintaining the oxygen balance in these tissues and for removing waste products.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Abnormalities or damage to the pharyngeal plexus (venous) can lead to various medical conditions. For instance, pharyngeal varices, which are enlarged veins in the pharynx, can occur if the plexus becomes congested. This condition can cause symptoms such as difficulty swallowing and throat discomfort.
