Phenoxyethanol is a chemical compound often used in dermatological products such as skin creams and sunscreen. Phenoxyethanol is used in many applications including cosmetics, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals. Its primary use is as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products where it inhibits the growth of bacteria and stabilizes the ingredients in a product, extending its shelf life.

In cosmetics, phenoxyethanol is used in many products such as perfumes, soaps, and creams. It is also used in hair care products, bath products, eye and facial makeup, as well as skin and nail care products.

Pharmaceuticals[edit | edit source]

In pharmaceuticals, phenoxyethanol is used as a preservative in vaccines, as well as a topical antiseptic, a topical anesthetic, and an antimicrobial in injectable medications.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Phenoxyethanol is considered safe for use in cosmetics up to a concentration of 1.0% in the EU and up to 2.2% in Japan. However, it can cause skin and lung irritation. It may also have neurotoxic effects.

Regulation[edit | edit source]

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of phenoxyethanol as an indirect food additive. In the European Union, it is approved for use as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products up to a maximum concentration of 1.0%.
