Phineas Jonathan Horwitz
Phineas Jonathan Horwitz (1822–1904) was an American physician and surgeon who served as a medical officer in the United States Navy. He is notable for his contributions to naval medicine and his role in the development of medical practices within the Navy.

Phineas Jonathan Horwitz was born in 1822. He pursued his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his M.D. degree.

Horwitz joined the United States Navy as an assistant surgeon in 1847. Over the course of his career, he served on various naval vessels and at different naval stations. His work was instrumental in improving the health and medical care of sailors.

Horwitz made significant contributions to the field of naval medicine. He was involved in the establishment of better sanitary practices aboard ships and at naval hospitals. His efforts helped reduce the incidence of diseases such as scurvy and yellow fever among sailors.

After a distinguished career, Horwitz retired from the Navy in 1884. He continued to be active in medical circles and contributed to various medical journals. Horwitz passed away in 1904, leaving behind a legacy of improved medical practices in the Navy.
