Piara Khabra MP

Piara Singh Khabra (20 November 1921 – 19 June 2007) was a British Labour Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ealing Southall from 1992 until his death in 2007. He was the oldest serving MP at the time of his death.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Piara Khabra was born in Punjab, India, in 1921. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1959. Before entering politics, Khabra worked as a teacher and was actively involved in community work, particularly within the Indian community in the UK.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Khabra joined the Labour Party and was elected as the MP for Ealing Southall in the 1992 general election. He succeeded Sydney Bidwell, who had been deselected by the party. Khabra was re-elected in subsequent elections and served as the MP for Ealing Southall until his death in 2007.

During his time in Parliament, Khabra was known for his advocacy on issues affecting the South Asian community in the UK, including immigration, education, and social justice. He was also a member of several parliamentary committees and was involved in various initiatives to promote multiculturalism and community cohesion.

Khabra was married and had children. He was a devout Sikh and was actively involved in the Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) in his constituency and beyond.

Piara Khabra passed away on 19 June 2007 at the age of 85. His death led to a by-election in the Ealing Southall constituency, which was subsequently won by Virendra Sharma of the Labour Party.
