Pilot is the first episode of the American television series Psych. The episode originally aired on July 7, 2006, on the USA Network. The show was created by Steve Franks, who also co-wrote the pilot with Kerry Lenhart and John J. Sakmar. The pilot introduces the main characters and sets up the premise of the series.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The episode begins with a flashback to 1986, where a young Shawn Spencer is being trained by his father, Henry Spencer, a former police officer, to observe and remember details. Fast forward to the present day, Shawn (played by James Roday Rodriguez) is a slacker with a remarkable talent for noticing details. He frequently calls in tips to the Santa Barbara Police Department (SBPD), leading them to suspect him of being involved in the crimes.

When Shawn's latest tip leads to the arrest of a suspect, the police, including Detective Carlton Lassiter (played by Timothy Omundson) and Detective Juliet O'Hara (played by Maggie Lawson), become suspicious of his abilities. To avoid being arrested, Shawn pretends to be a psychic. With the help of his best friend, Burton "Gus" Guster (played by Dulé Hill), Shawn opens a psychic detective agency called Psych.
