From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

PizzaExpress is a restaurant chain based in the United Kingdom that specializes in serving pizza. The company was founded in 1965 by Peter Boizot and has since expanded to operate over 470 restaurants across the UK and 100 overseas in Europe, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, The Philippines, The United Arab Emirates, China and Singapore.

History[edit | edit source]

Peter Boizot established the first PizzaExpress restaurant in Wardour Street, Soho, London in 1965. The restaurant was notable for its unusual concept at the time, which was to serve high-quality pizza in a restaurant setting. Boizot imported a pizza oven from Italy and hired a chef from Naples to ensure the authenticity of his pizzas.

Menu[edit | edit source]

The menu at PizzaExpress includes a variety of Italian dishes, with a particular focus on pizzas. The pizzas are made in the traditional Italian style, with thin crusts and high-quality toppings. The menu also includes pasta dishes, salads, and desserts.

Expansion[edit | edit source]

In the 1990s, PizzaExpress began to expand outside of the UK, opening restaurants in several other countries. The company has also diversified its operations by launching a line of retail products, including pizza bases and dressings, which are sold in supermarkets.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

PizzaExpress has faced criticism for its use of zero-hours contracts, a controversial practice in the UK. The company has also been involved in a tax avoidance controversy, which led to protests at several of its restaurants.
