Pla i Llevant (DO)
Pla i Llevant is a Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for wines located in the central and eastern part of the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, Spain. The DOP was established in 1999 and covers a variety of wines including red, white, and rosé.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of winemaking in the Pla i Llevant region dates back to ancient times, with evidence of viticulture from the Roman period. The region's wine industry experienced significant growth in the 19th century but faced challenges such as the phylloxera plague. The establishment of the DOP in 1999 marked a resurgence in the quality and recognition of the region's wines.
Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]
The Pla i Llevant region is characterized by its diverse geography, which includes plains and gentle hills. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This climate, combined with the region's calcareous soils, provides ideal conditions for viticulture.

The DOP allows for a variety of grapes to be cultivated, including both native and international varieties. Some of the primary grape varieties include:
- Manto Negro
- Callet
- Moll (also known as Prensal Blanc)
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot

- Chardonnay
Wine Production[edit | edit source]
Wines produced in the Pla i Llevant DOP are known for their quality and distinct characteristics. The production process adheres to strict regulations to ensure the authenticity and quality of the wines. The region produces a range of wine styles, including:
- Red wines: Typically robust and full-bodied, often aged in oak barrels.
- White wines: Fresh and aromatic, with a balance of acidity and fruitiness.
- Rosé wines: Light and refreshing, with a delicate balance of flavors.
Winemaking Techniques[edit | edit source]
Winemakers in the Pla i Llevant region employ both traditional and modern techniques. The use of oak barrels for aging, controlled fermentation processes, and careful selection of grapes are some of the methods used to produce high-quality wines.
Tourism[edit | edit source]
The Pla i Llevant region is also a popular destination for wine tourism. Visitors can explore the picturesque vineyards, participate in wine tastings, and learn about the winemaking process. The region's wineries often offer tours and events that showcase the local wine culture.
