Plasmalogen synthase

Plasmalogen Synthase is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the biosynthesis of plasmalogens, which are a type of phospholipid found in high concentrations in the membranes of heart, brain, and immune system cells. Function

Plasmalogen synthase catalyzes the critical step in the formation of plasmalogens, which involves the introduction of a vinyl ether bond at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone. This reaction is distinctive because it differentiates plasmalogens from other phospholipids, which typically have an ester linkage at this position. The unique vinyl ether bond in plasmalogens is believed to confer antioxidant properties, as it can scavenge reactive oxygen species and protect cells from oxidative damage.

Types
