PlayStation is a brand of video game consoles and multimedia entertainment systems developed and marketed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, a division of Sony Corporation. The PlayStation brand was first introduced in Japan on December 3, 1994, with the launch of the original PlayStation console. It has since become a major part of the global video game industry, with multiple consoles released across several generations.

The inception of the PlayStation dates back to a failed partnership between Sony and Nintendo in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The collaboration was intended to develop a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).
