Pneumocystis carinii

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Pneumocystis carinii is a fungus species that is known to cause Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), a severe lung infection, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Pneumocystis carinii was first identified in the early 20th century and was initially believed to be a protozoa. However, later research revealed that it is a fungus. It is one of several species in the genus Pneumocystis that can infect humans, with Pneumocystis jirovecii being the most common.

Infection and Disease[edit | edit source]

Infection with Pneumocystis carinii typically occurs in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, those undergoing chemotherapy, or organ transplant recipients. The fungus is believed to be transmitted through the air and can cause a form of pneumonia known as Pneumocystis pneumonia.

Diagnosis and Treatment[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii infection is typically made through examination of a sputum sample under a microscope. Treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics and antifungal medications, such as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
