Pollino DOC
Pollino DOC is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine designation for red and white wines produced in the Pollino National Park area, located in the southern Italian regions of Basilicata and Calabria. The DOC was established in 2009, making it one of the newer wine designations in Italy.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of viticulture in the Pollino area dates back to ancient times, with the first vineyards believed to have been planted by the Ancient Greeks. The region's unique climate and soil conditions have made it an ideal location for wine production for centuries.
Production[edit | edit source]
Pollino DOC wines are produced from a variety of grape varieties, including Aglianico, Greco bianco, and Malvasia bianca. The wines are known for their distinctive flavors and high quality, with the red wines in particular being noted for their depth and complexity.
Wine Styles[edit | edit source]
Pollino DOC includes both red and white wines. The red wines are typically full-bodied and rich, with flavors of dark fruit and spices. The white wines, on the other hand, are usually light and crisp, with flavors of citrus and green apple.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
The vineyards in the Pollino DOC are located at high altitudes, which contributes to the unique characteristics of the wines. The soil in the region is primarily limestone and clay, which provides excellent drainage and contributes to the intensity of the wines' flavors.
Pairing[edit | edit source]
Pollino DOC wines are versatile and can be paired with a wide range of foods. The red wines are particularly well-suited to hearty dishes like pasta and red meat, while the white wines are excellent with seafood and light poultry dishes.
