Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a colourless organic thermoplastic polymer in the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family, used in engineering applications. PEEK is a popular material in the medical field due to its biocompatibility, chemical resistance, and high strength-to-weight ratio.

Polyetheretherketone was first synthesized by Victor Y. Grinberg and Kazimir S. Minsker in 1977. It was later commercialized by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in the early 1980s.

Properties[edit | edit source]

PEEK is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with excellent mechanical and chemical resistance properties that are retained to high temperatures. The processing conditions used to mold PEEK can influence the crystallinity, and hence the mechanical properties.

Medical Applications[edit | edit source]

PEEK is extensively used in the medical industry. Its biocompatibility, stability, and ability to be easily sterilized make it a material of choice for many medical applications.

Orthopedics[edit | edit source]

PEEK is used in orthopedic surgery for applications such as spinal fusion devices. It is preferred over metal due to its similar stiffness to bone, reducing stress shielding.

In dentistry, PEEK is used for dental implants and prosthetics. It is lightweight, durable, and can be colored to match the patient's teeth.

Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

PEEK is recyclable and can be reprocessed into new products. However, its high processing temperature and the complexity of recycling processes can make it challenging to recycle.
