Pomisartan

Pomisartan is a hypothetical angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used in the management of hypertension and certain types of heart failure. As an ARB, Pomisartan functions by inhibiting the effects of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, thereby promoting vasodilation and reducing blood pressure.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Pomisartan selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, which is found in various tissues such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. By preventing this interaction, Pomisartan reduces vasoconstriction, aldosterone secretion, and sodium reabsorption, leading to decreased blood pressure and reduced workload on the heart.

Angiotensin II is a key component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which regulates blood pressure and fluid balance. Pomisartan's mechanism of action involves competitive antagonism of the AT1 receptor, thereby mitigating the effects of angiotensin II. This results in:

  • Decreased secretion of aldosterone
  • Reduced sympathetic nervous system activity

Pomisartan is administered orally and is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It undergoes hepatic metabolism, primarily via the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, and is excreted in both urine and feces. The half-life of Pomisartan allows for once-daily dosing, which enhances patient compliance.
