Postal codes in Finland
Postal codes in Finland
Postal codes in Finland are used to identify specific geographic areas and facilitate the sorting and delivery of mail. The system was introduced in 1971 and is managed by Posti Group, the main postal service provider in Finland.
Structure[edit | edit source]
Finnish postal codes consist of five digits. The first two digits represent the postal district, while the last three digits specify the exact location within that district. For example, the postal code 00100 corresponds to the central area of Helsinki, the capital city of Finland.
Postal Districts[edit | edit source]
The first digit of the postal code indicates the postal district:
- 0 - Helsinki and surrounding areas
- 1 - Turku and southwestern Finland
- 2 - Tampere and western Finland
- 3 - Lahti and central Finland
- 4 - Kuopio and eastern Finland
- 5 - Oulu and northern Finland
- 6 - Vaasa and western Finland
- 7 - Lappeenranta and southeastern Finland
- 8 - Kokkola and western Finland
- 9 - Rovaniemi and northern Finland
Special Codes[edit | edit source]
Certain postal codes are reserved for specific purposes:
- 00000 - Reserved for special use by Posti Group
- 99999 - Used for Santa Claus's main post office in Rovaniemi
Usage[edit | edit source]
Postal codes are used in addresses to ensure accurate and efficient delivery of mail. They are also used in various administrative and commercial applications, such as geocoding and logistics.
