Presacral fascia

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Presacral fascia is a type of fascia located in the pelvis, specifically in the area anterior to the sacrum. It is a part of the pelvic fascia, which is a complex structure that plays a crucial role in supporting the organs of the pelvis.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "presacral" is derived from the Latin words "pre" meaning "before" and "sacrum" referring to the large, triangular bone at the base of the spine. "Fascia" is a Latin term meaning "band" or "bandage," which describes the tissue's function as a supportive and protective layer.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The presacral fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that covers the front of the sacrum. It is continuous with the parietal fascia of the pelvis and forms part of the endopelvic fascia, a structure that provides support to the pelvic organs. The presacral fascia is bordered by the rectum anteriorly and the sacrum posteriorly.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

The presacral fascia is an important landmark in various surgical procedures involving the pelvis, such as rectal surgery and gynecological surgery. It serves as a guide for surgeons to avoid damaging the nearby nerves and blood vessels. In addition, abnormalities in the presacral fascia, such as fascial defects or fascial hernias, can lead to various medical conditions, including chronic pain and pelvic organ prolapse.
