Projectional radiography

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Projectional radiography is a form of radiography and medical imaging that produces two-dimensional images by x-ray radiation. The image acquisition is generally performed by radiographers, and the images are often examined by radiologists.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Projectional radiography is the basis of conventional radiography. The technology functions by passing a controlled burst of X-ray radiation through the body, and capturing the resulting image on a detecting device.

Types of Projectional Radiography[edit | edit source]

There are several types of projectional radiography. For example, Chest radiography and Abdominal radiography are used to diagnose conditions affecting the chest and abdomen, respectively. Orthopantomogram and Cephalometric analysis are used in dentistry.

Chest Radiography[edit | edit source]

Chest radiography, also known as a chest x-ray, is the most common type of projectional radiography. It is used to diagnose conditions affecting the chest, such as pneumonia, lung cancer, and heart conditions.

Abdominal Radiography[edit | edit source]

Abdominal radiography is used to diagnose conditions affecting the abdomen, such as appendicitis, bowel obstruction, and kidney stones.

Orthopantomogram[edit | edit source]

An Orthopantomogram, also known as a panoramic x-ray, is a type of dental x-ray that provides a panoramic view of the mouth, teeth, and jaws.

Cephalometric Analysis[edit | edit source]

Cephalometric analysis is a type of dental x-ray used to study the dental and skeletal relationships in the head.

Risks and Benefits[edit | edit source]

Like all forms of radiography, projectional radiography involves exposure to ionizing radiation. However, the benefits of accurate diagnosis often outweigh the potential risks.
