Proteoglycan 4
Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4), also known as lubricin, is a critical biomolecule involved in the lubrication and protection of tissues such as cartilage in joints. It is a member of the proteoglycan family, which are proteins that are heavily glycosylated, meaning they have several carbohydrate groups attached. The gene responsible for encoding PRG4 is located on chromosome 1 (1q31). Mutations in this gene can affect the production or function of PRG4, leading to conditions such as camptodactyly-arthropathy-coxa vara-pericarditis syndrome (CACP), a rare genetic disorder characterized by joint problems and pericarditis.
