Psilocybe hispanica is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. This species is known for its psychoactive properties, primarily due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin. It was first described in 2000 by Guzmán, Estevez, and Ramirez-Guillen.

Description[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe hispanica has a conical to convex cap that measures 1-2 cm in diameter. The cap is typically brownish to reddish-brown and becomes more yellowish as it dries. The gills are adnate to adnexed and are initially light brown, becoming darker with age. The stipe is slender, measuring 3-6 cm in length and 0.1-0.2 cm in thickness, and is usually the same color as the cap or slightly lighter. The spore print is dark purple-brown.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe hispanica is found in Spain, particularly in the Pyrenees region. It typically grows in grassy areas, often in manured soil or in the vicinity of herbivore dung. The fruiting season is usually from late summer to early autumn.

Psychoactive Properties[edit | edit source]

The primary active compounds in Psilocybe hispanica are psilocybin and psilocin, which are known to cause hallucinogenic effects. These effects can include altered perception of time and space, visual and auditory hallucinations, and profound changes in thought and mood. The intensity and duration of these effects can vary depending on the dosage and individual sensitivity.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of Psilocybe hispanica varies by country. In many places, the possession, sale, and use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms are regulated or prohibited. It is important to be aware of and comply with local laws regarding these substances.
