Psilocybe magnispora
Psilocybe magnispora is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. This species is known for its psychoactive properties, which are primarily due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin.
Taxonomy and Naming[edit | edit source]
The species was first described by mycologist Rolf Singer in 1958. The genus Psilocybe is derived from the Greek words "psilos" (bare) and "kube" (head), referring to the smooth cap of the mushrooms in this genus. The specific epithet magnispora refers to the large size of the spores.
Description[edit | edit source]
Psilocybe magnispora has the following characteristics:
- Cap: The cap is conical to convex, often with a slight umbo, and measures 1-3 cm in diameter. It is hygrophanous, changing color as it loses moisture, typically from a dark brown to a lighter tan.
- Gills: The gills are adnate to adnexed, close, and initially pale brown, becoming darker with age as the spores mature.
- Stipe: The stipe is 3-6 cm long and 0.2-0.4 cm thick, often with a slight enlargement at the base. It is typically white to pale brown and may bruise blue when handled.
- Spores: The spores are dark purplish-brown, ellipsoid, and measure 12-15 x 7-9 µm.
- Odor and Taste: The odor and taste are not distinctive.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
Psilocybe magnispora is typically found in temperate regions, growing on decaying wood, forest litter, or manure. It is often found in coniferous and deciduous forests. The distribution of this species includes various regions, but specific locations are not well-documented.
Psychoactive Properties[edit | edit source]
The psychoactive effects of Psilocybe magnispora are due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin. These compounds interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perception, mood, and cognition. The intensity and duration of the effects can vary based on the dosage and individual sensitivity.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of Psilocybe magnispora varies by country. In many places, the possession, sale, and use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms are regulated or prohibited. It is important to be aware of local laws and regulations regarding these substances.
