Psilocybe pseudoaztecorum is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. This species is known for its psychoactive properties, which are primarily due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin.

Taxonomy and Naming[edit | edit source]

The species was first described by Guzmán in 1978. The name pseudoaztecorum refers to its similarity to Psilocybe aztecorum, another species of psilocybin mushroom.

Description[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe pseudoaztecorum has a distinctive appearance that includes the following characteristics:

  • Cap: The cap is conical to bell-shaped, often with a slight umbo, and measures 1-3 cm in diameter. It is hygrophanous, changing color as it loses moisture, typically from a dark brown to a lighter tan.
  • Gills: The gills are adnate to adnexed, starting out pale and becoming dark purple-brown as the spores mature.
  • Stipe: The stipe (stem) is slender, measuring 4-8 cm in length and 0.1-0.3 cm in thickness. It is typically white to yellowish and may bruise blue when handled.
  • Spores: The spores are dark purple-brown, ellipsoid, and measure 10-13 x 6-7 µm.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe pseudoaztecorum is typically found in Mexico, particularly in the highland regions. It grows in pine and oak forests, often in mossy areas or on decaying wood. The fruiting bodies appear during the rainy season, from June to September.

Psychoactive Properties[edit | edit source]

The psychoactive effects of Psilocybe pseudoaztecorum are due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin. These compounds interact with the serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perceptions, mood changes, and visual hallucinations. The intensity and duration of the effects can vary depending on the dosage and individual sensitivity.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of Psilocybe pseudoaztecorum varies by country. In many places, the possession, sale, and use of psilocybin mushrooms are regulated or prohibited. It is important to be aware of the local laws regarding these substances.
