Psychogenic tremor
Psychogenic tremor (also known as functional tremor) is a type of tremor that is believed to be caused by psychological factors, such as stress or emotional trauma. It is one of the most common types of functional neurological disorders, and it can affect any part of the body.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Psychogenic tremor is defined as a tremor that is caused by the mind, rather than a physical disease or condition. It is often associated with psychological conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The tremor can vary in severity, from mild and barely noticeable to severe and disabling.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of psychogenic tremor can vary widely, but they often include shaking or trembling in one or more parts of the body, such as the hands, arms, legs, or head. The tremor may be constant or intermittent, and it may vary in intensity. Other symptoms can include difficulty with coordination and balance, muscle weakness, and difficulty with fine motor tasks.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of psychogenic tremor is often challenging, as it involves ruling out other potential causes of the tremor. This often involves a thorough medical history and physical examination, as well as various tests and procedures, such as neuroimaging studies and electromyography (EMG). In some cases, a psychological evaluation may also be necessary.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
The treatment of psychogenic tremor often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including psychotherapy, physiotherapy, and medication. Psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), can be effective in addressing the underlying psychological issues that may be contributing to the tremor. Physiotherapy can help to improve muscle strength and coordination, while medication can help to manage any associated symptoms, such as anxiety or depression.
Prognosis[edit | edit source]
The prognosis for individuals with psychogenic tremor varies, depending on the severity of the tremor and the individual's response to treatment. With appropriate treatment, many individuals can experience significant improvement in their symptoms.
