Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

The Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (QEIIMC), commonly known as QEII, is a medical campus located in Perth, Western Australia. Situated in the suburb of Nedlands, adjacent to Kings Park, it is home to several prominent medical institutions including Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital, and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.

The site was acquired by the state government in 1910 and leased to the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1922. However, it remained largely undeveloped until 1953 when plans were made to establish a medical center with a teaching hospital as its centerpiece. Originally named the Perth Medical Centre, it was renamed in 1977 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. A separate trust was created by an act of parliament in 1966 to manage the land, with UWA having representation on the board.

The Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre is a significant hub for medical research, education, and healthcare in Western Australia. It continues to play a vital role in advancing medical knowledge and providing high-quality healthcare services to the community.
