RAF Hospital Uxbridge

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

RAF Hospital Uxbridge was a former military hospital located within the Royal Air Force station RAF Uxbridge in Uxbridge, Greater London, England. It was operated by the Royal Air Force and owned by the Ministry of Defence.

The hospital played a significant role in the recovery of Douglas Bader, a pilot who had both of his legs amputated after a flying accident in 1932. During his stay at RAF Hospital Uxbridge, Bader was fitted with lightweight aluminium prosthetic limbs, which allowed him to return to active service with the RAF. He became known as "the legless pilot".

In 1940, the officers' hospital on the station was converted into the Women's Auxiliary Air Force Hospital, while the officers' hospital was relocated to RAF Hospital Torquay.

RAF Hospital Uxbridge operated from 1925 until 2010. It served as an important medical facility for the Royal Air Force during its years of operation.
