Raschau-Markersbach

Raschau-Markersbach is a municipality in the district of Erzgebirgskreis, in Saxony, Germany. It was formed on 1 January 2008 by the merger of the former municipalities Raschau and Markersbach.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Raschau-Markersbach is located in the Ore Mountains, a mountain range in the eastern part of Germany. The municipality is situated along the Zschopau River, which flows through the center of the town. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque valleys.

The history of Raschau-Markersbach dates back to the Middle Ages. The first written mention of Raschau dates back to 1397, while Markersbach was first mentioned in 1539. Both towns were historically part of the Kingdom of Saxony and later became part of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) after World War II.

The economy of Raschau-Markersbach is largely based on industry and manufacturing. The Markersbach Pumped Storage Plant, one of the largest pumped-storage power plants in Germany, is located in the municipality. Other significant industries include metalworking and textile manufacturing.

Raschau-Markersbach is home to several cultural and historical attractions. These include the St. Afra Church in Raschau, a historic church dating back to the 15th century, and the Markersbach Dam, a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing.
