Rasteau AOC[edit | edit source]

Rasteau AOC is a wine-growing Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the southern part of the Rhône wine region of France, where the wines are produced in the commune of Rasteau. The AOC is known for its full-bodied red wines, which are similar in style to those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and its sweet fortified wines, known as Vin Doux Naturel (VDN).

History[edit | edit source]

The Rasteau area has a long history of wine production, dating back to the Roman times. It was granted the Côtes du Rhône Villages status in 1967, and in 2010, it was upgraded to Côtes du Rhône Cru status, the highest level of classification in the region.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

The vineyards of Rasteau AOC cover approximately 880 hectares and produce around 34,000 hectoliters of wine per year. The main grape variety used is Grenache, but Syrah and Mourvèdre are also used. The AOC regulations stipulate that the wines must contain at least 50% Grenache.

Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

Rasteau AOC produces both dry red wines and sweet fortified wines. The red wines are known for their full-bodied, spicy character, with flavors of dark fruit and hints of earthiness. The sweet wines, known as Vin Doux Naturel, are made from overripe Grenache grapes and have a rich, sweet, fruity character.

Food Pairing[edit | edit source]

The full-bodied red wines of Rasteau AOC pair well with hearty dishes such as stews, roasts, and game. The sweet wines are excellent with desserts, particularly chocolate-based ones, or can be enjoyed on their own as a dessert wine.
