Family of viruses

Redondoviridae is a family of single-stranded DNA viruses that have been identified in human respiratory tract samples. These viruses are characterized by their small, circular DNA genomes and are part of the CRESS-DNA virus group, which stands for "circular Rep-encoding single-stranded DNA viruses". The family includes two genera: Vientovirus and Brisavirus.

Genome[edit | edit source]

Genome map of Redondoviridae

The genome of Redondoviridae is circular and consists of approximately 3,000 nucleotides. It encodes two main proteins: the replication-associated protein (Rep) and the capsid protein (Cap). The Rep protein is involved in the replication of the viral genome, while the Cap protein forms the protective shell around the viral DNA.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Redondoviruses are non-enveloped viruses with icosahedral symmetry. The capsid is composed of the Cap protein, which assembles into a protective structure around the viral genome. The small size and simple structure of these viruses are typical of the CRESS-DNA virus group.

Discovery and Epidemiology[edit | edit source]

Redondoviruses were first identified in 2019 through metagenomic sequencing of human respiratory tract samples. They have been found in both healthy individuals and those with respiratory illnesses, although their exact role in disease is not yet fully understood. The prevalence of redondoviruses in the human population and their potential impact on health are areas of ongoing research.

Pathogenesis[edit | edit source]

The pathogenic potential of redondoviruses is still under investigation. While they have been detected in individuals with respiratory conditions, it is unclear whether they are causative agents of disease or simply commensal organisms. Further studies are needed to elucidate their role in human health and disease.
