Rex Ingram (January 15, 1895 – September 19, 1969) was an American actor of stage, screen, and television. He is best known for his roles in classic films such as The Thief of Bagdad and The Green Pastures. Ingram was one of the first African-American actors to gain prominence in Hollywood during the early 20th century.

Rex Ingram was born on January 15, 1895, in Cairo, Illinois. He was the son of a steamer fireman and a schoolteacher. Ingram attended the Northwestern University Medical School, where he studied medicine before deciding to pursue a career in acting.

Ingram's acting career began on the stage, where he performed in various productions. He made his film debut in the silent film Tarzan of the Apes (1918). His breakthrough role came in the 1936 film The Green Pastures, where he played the character of De Lawd. This role brought him significant recognition and established him as a talented actor.

In 1940, Ingram starred in The Thief of Bagdad as the Djinn, a role that showcased his versatility and acting prowess. He continued to work in both film and television throughout his career, appearing in notable films such as Cabin in the Sky (1943) and Sahara (1943).

Ingram was married to Dena De Lee, a former actress. The couple had no children. Ingram was known for his deep voice and commanding presence, which made him a memorable figure in the entertainment industry.

Rex Ingram passed away on September 19, 1969, in Hollywood, California, at the age of 74. He left behind a legacy as one of the pioneering African-American actors in Hollywood.
