Northwestern University is a private university located in Evanston, Illinois. It was founded in 1851 by John Evans, for whom the city of Evanston is named, and eight other prominent Chicagoans. The university is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference and remains the only private university in the conference.

Northwestern was established to serve the former Northwest Territory, an area that now includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. The university's founders intended to create an institution of "the highest order of excellence" to serve the people of this region.
Campuses[edit | edit source]
Northwestern's main campus is located in Evanston, along the shores of Lake Michigan. The university also has a campus in Chicago, which houses the Feinberg School of Medicine, the Pritzker School of Law, and other professional schools. Additionally, Northwestern has a campus in Doha, Qatar, which offers undergraduate degrees in journalism and communication.

Northwestern is composed of eleven undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, including the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Kellogg School of Management, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Communication, the Bienen School of Music, and the Medill School of Journalism.
Research[edit | edit source]
Northwestern is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". The university's research efforts are supported by numerous centers and institutes, including the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Institute for Policy Research, and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center.
Athletics[edit | edit source]
Northwestern's athletic teams are known as the Northwestern Wildcats. The university is a member of the Big Ten Conference and competes in 19 varsity sports. The Wildcats' mascot is Willie the Wildcat, and their colors are purple and white.
Notable Alumni[edit | edit source]
Northwestern has produced many notable alumni, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, Nobel Prize-winning economist Dale T. Mortensen, and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
