Richard Carlson (May 16, 1961 – December 13, 2006) was an American author, psychotherapist, and motivational speaker best known for his book series Don't Sweat the Small Stuff and its various sequels, which aimed to help readers reduce stress in their lives. Richard Carlson was born in Piedmont, California, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He received his bachelor's degree from Pepperdine University in 1982 and later earned a doctorate in Psychology from the Sierra University in 1988. Before becoming a renowned author, Carlson had a successful practice as a psychotherapist.

In 1997, Carlson published Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... and It's All Small Stuff, a book that quickly became a bestseller and transformed him into a sought-after motivational speaker and media personality. The book's premise is that individuals can live happier and more stress-free lives by focusing on the big picture and not getting hung up on the minor details.
