Rieslaner
German white wine grape variety
Rieslaner is a white wine grape variety that originated in Germany. It is a cross between the Silvaner and Riesling grape varieties. Rieslaner is primarily grown in the Franconia and Palatinate regions of Germany. The grape is known for producing wines with high acidity and a distinctive aromatic profile.
History[edit | edit source]
Rieslaner was created in 1921 by August Ziegler at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in Veitshöchheim, Bavaria. The goal was to combine the best qualities of its parent varieties, Silvaner and Riesling. The grape was officially recognized in 1956 and has since become a niche variety in German viticulture.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Rieslaner vines are known for their late ripening, which makes them suitable for regions with a long growing season. The grape thrives in well-drained soils and requires careful vineyard management to prevent overproduction, which can dilute the quality of the wine. Rieslaner is particularly susceptible to noble rot, which can enhance the sweetness and complexity of the wine.
Wine characteristics[edit | edit source]
Rieslaner wines are noted for their high acidity and aromatic intensity. They often exhibit flavors of citrus, green apple, and stone fruits, with floral and mineral notes. The wines can range from dry to sweet, with the sweeter styles often being the most prized. Due to its high acidity, Rieslaner is well-suited for producing dessert wines, including Trockenbeerenauslese.
Regions[edit | edit source]
While Rieslaner is primarily associated with Franconia and the Palatinate, it is also grown in smaller quantities in other German wine regions. The grape's ability to produce high-quality wines in a variety of styles has led to a growing interest among winemakers and consumers alike.
