Isoniazid/rifampicin

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Rifamate)

Isoniazid/rifampicin is a combination medication used in the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis. This combination of drugs is often administered as part of a first-line treatment for active tuberculosis due to the potency of the two medications when used together.

Composition[edit | edit source]

The medication is composed of two active ingredients: isoniazid and rifampicin. Isoniazid is an antibiotic that works by preventing the bacteria from creating mycolic acids, which are essential components of the bacterial cell wall. Rifampicin, on the other hand, is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in bacterial cells, thereby preventing the bacteria from reproducing.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Isoniazid/rifampicin is used primarily in the treatment of tuberculosis, a contagious disease that primarily affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body. The medication is typically administered orally, and the dosage is determined by the patient's weight and the severity of the condition.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all medications, isoniazid/rifampicin can cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach. More serious side effects can include liver damage, peripheral neuropathy, and hypersensitivity reactions. Patients are advised to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any severe or persistent side effects.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before starting treatment with isoniazid/rifampicin, patients should inform their healthcare provider about any existing health conditions and any other medications they are currently taking. This is because isoniazid/rifampicin can interact with other medications and can worsen certain health conditions.
