Robenacoxib

Robenacoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in veterinary medicine to treat pain and inflammation in cats and dogs. It is marketed under the brand name Onsior by Novartis Animal Health.

Pharmacology

Robenacoxib works by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is responsible for the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, pain, and fever. By inhibiting COX-2, robenacoxib reduces these symptoms. Unlike other NSAIDs, robenacoxib is selective for COX-2, meaning it does not inhibit the COX-1 enzyme. This selectivity makes it less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects than other NSAIDs.

Uses

Robenacoxib is used to treat pain and inflammation associated with surgery or chronic conditions like osteoarthritis. It is also used to reduce fever. It is available in tablet form and as an injection.

Side effects

The most common side effects of robenacoxib are vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. More serious side effects can occur, including kidney damage, liver damage, and gastrointestinal ulcers. These side effects are more likely in animals that are dehydrated, on concomitant diuretic therapy, or those with existing kidney, heart, and liver disorders.

Contraindications

Robenacoxib should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity to it or other NSAIDs. It should also not be used in animals with gastrointestinal ulcers, impaired liver or kidney function, or bleeding disorders.
