Robert B. Salter

Robert Bruce Salter (December 15, 1924 – May 10, 2010) was a Canadian orthopedic surgeon, known for developing the Salter-Harris classification system for fractures involving the growth plate in children, and the Salter's osteotomy surgical procedure.

Early life and education

Salter was born in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1947.

Career

Salter's career was primarily based at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where he worked for over 35 years. He was known for his work in pediatric orthopedics, particularly in the treatment of congenital hip dislocation and Perthes disease. He developed the Salter-Harris classification system, which is used to describe fractures involving the growth plate in children. He also developed the Salter's osteotomy surgical procedure, which is used to treat hip dysplasia in children.

Awards and recognition

Salter received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including the Order of Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. He was also inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

Death

Salter died on May 10, 2010, at the age of 85.
