Robert D. Stuart Jr.
Robert Douglas Stuart Jr. (April 26, 1916 – May 8, 2014) was an American businessman, diplomat, and political figure. He was best known as the founder of the Quaker Oats Company and for his service as the United States Ambassador to Norway.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Robert D. Stuart Jr. was born in Winnetka, Illinois, to Robert Douglas Stuart Sr. and Harriet McClure Stuart. He attended Princeton University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1937. He later attended Yale Law School, graduating in 1942.
Military Service[edit | edit source]
During World War II, Stuart served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of captain. He was involved in several key operations and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service.
Business Career[edit | edit source]
After the war, Stuart joined the family business, the Quaker Oats Company, which was founded by his father. He became president of the company in 1962 and later served as its chairman and CEO. Under his leadership, Quaker Oats expanded its product line and increased its market share.
Political Involvement[edit | edit source]
Stuart was an active member of the Republican Party. He was a close advisor to several Republican presidents and was involved in various political campaigns. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan appointed him as the United States Ambassador to Norway, a position he held until 1989.
Diplomatic Career[edit | edit source]
As the United States Ambassador to Norway, Stuart worked to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Norway. He was instrumental in promoting American interests in the region and fostering diplomatic and economic ties.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Stuart married Barbara Edwards in 1943, and they had six children. He was an active philanthropist and supported various educational and cultural institutions. Stuart passed away on May 8, 2014, in Lake Forest, Illinois.
