Robert Kadlec is an American physician and public health official who has served in various capacities within the United States government. He is known for his expertise in biodefense and public health preparedness.

Robert Kadlec was born in the United States. He earned his M.D. degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and later obtained a M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Military Service[edit | edit source]

Kadlec served as a career officer and physician in the United States Air Force. During his military career, he held various positions related to biodefense and emergency preparedness.

Government Service[edit | edit source]

Kadlec has held several significant positions within the U.S. government. He served as the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Biodefense Policy on the Homeland Security Council during the administration of George W. Bush. In this role, he was responsible for coordinating the nation's biodefense efforts.

In 2017, Kadlec was appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). As ASPR, he was responsible for leading the nation's efforts in preparing for and responding to public health emergencies, including pandemics, natural disasters, and bioterrorism.

Kadlec has been a key figure in shaping U.S. biodefense policy. He has advocated for the development of medical countermeasures, such as vaccines and therapeutics, to protect the public from biological threats. Under his leadership, the ASPR office has worked to enhance the nation's ability to respond to public health emergencies through initiatives like the Strategic National Stockpile and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
