Robert Maskell Patterson
Robert Maskell Patterson (March 23, 1787 – September 5, 1854) was an American scientist and educator. He was a prominent figure in the early development of science and education in the United States.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Robert Maskell Patterson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Robert Patterson, a noted mathematician and professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He followed in his father's footsteps, showing an early aptitude for science and mathematics. Patterson graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1804.
Career[edit | edit source]
Patterson began his career as a professor of natural philosophy and mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1812. He was known for his engaging lectures and contributions to the field of science. In 1828, he succeeded his father as the director of the United States Mint, a position he held until 1835.
In 1835, Patterson was appointed as a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Virginia, where he continued to teach and inspire students until his death in 1854. He was also a member of several scientific societies, including the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Contributions to Science[edit | edit source]
Patterson made significant contributions to the fields of astronomy and mathematics. He was involved in the early development of the American Journal of Science, one of the first scientific journals in the United States. His work in the field of astronomy included observations and calculations that were critical to the understanding of celestial mechanics.

Patterson married Helen Hamilton, and they had several children. His son, Richard Patterson, followed in his footsteps and became a noted scientist and educator.
