Robert S. Strauss
Robert S. Strauss (October 19, 1918 – March 19, 2014) was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. He was a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and served in various capacities under several U.S. presidents.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Robert Schwarz Strauss was born in Lockhart, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1941. He later received his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law in 1941.
Career[edit | edit source]
Legal Career[edit | edit source]
Strauss co-founded the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in 1945, which became one of the largest and most influential law firms in the United States. He specialized in corporate law and lobbying.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Strauss was deeply involved in the Democratic Party. He served as the Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 1972 to 1977. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the election of Jimmy Carter as President in 1976.
Diplomatic Career[edit | edit source]
Strauss was appointed as the United States Trade Representative by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, a position he held until 1979. He was later appointed as the United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union by President George H. W. Bush in 1991, serving until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Following this, he became the United States Ambassador to Russia, serving from 1991 to 1992.

Strauss was married to Helen Jacobs Strauss, and they had three children. He was known for his bipartisan approach and ability to work across party lines.
