Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private research university located in the town of Henrietta, New York, in the Rochester metropolitan area. Founded in 1829, RIT is known for its career-focused education and experiential learning opportunities.

RIT was founded in 1829 as the Rochester Athenaeum, a literary society, and the Mechanics Institute, a technical training school. The two institutions merged in 1891 to form the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute, which was renamed Rochester Institute of Technology in 1944.

RIT offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of fields, including engineering, computer science, business, art, design, and liberal arts. The university is organized into nine colleges:

RIT is classified as an "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university conducts research in various fields, including imaging science, sustainability, cybersecurity, and accessibility.

RIT's athletic teams, known as the RIT Tigers, compete in the NCAA Division III and the Atlantic Hockey Association for men's ice hockey. The university offers a variety of sports, including soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and swimming.
