The city covers an area of 1.39 square miles, of which 1.34 square miles is land and 0.05 square miles is water.

- Rockwood was first settled in 1865 and was incorporated as a city in 1967. The city was named after a rocky ridge, which was a notable landmark for travelers in the area.
